Your Red Dwarf Christmas Gift Guide.

13 December, 2013

Turkey. The Snowman. Fights over the Monopoly board. Some Christmas traditions feel as old as time itself - and another one is reddwarf.co.uk giving you an annual reminder of all the excellent Red Dwarf-related gifts that are available for your last-minute December shopping.

And while it's sadly still not yet possible to get hold of a Stirmaster, we can offer you several Dwarfy delights that you won't need to spend several hours in a telephone queue to get hold of...

Blu-ray Sets

The two most recent series of Red Dwarf - that is, 2009's Back to Earth and 2012's Series X - are available in high-definition, taking advantage of the super-high-quality cameras used by Doug Naylor and co on the shows. Both sets come laden with the same set of bonus features as their respective DVDs, including documentaries, commentaries, deleted scenes and easter eggs.

Series DVD Sets

In addition to BTE and RDX, the best way to experience the first eight series of Red Dwarf remains their classic two- and three-disc DVD sets, released in pairs between 2002 and 2006. These sets feature an astonishing raft of bonus content (catalogued in detail on this very site throughout their production), from hours of deleted scenes and smeg-ups, to in-depth documentaries, musical featurettes and isolated cues, rare photo galleries, Red Dwarf Night broadcast material, collectors' booklets and plenty more besides. And they're all still in print, and readily available for less than a tenner a pop.

Just the Shows

If you only want the episodes, however, then you can't get better than the Just the Shows boxset, perhaps the fattest (and therefore most satisfying) Red Dwarf-related pressie you could leave under someone's tree. There are also individual Just the Shows sets available for Series I-IV and V-VIII respectively, and if you've got the shows and then suddenly find yourself in dire need of some Smeg Ups, then Just the Smegs - collecting the two classic VHS productions from 1993 and 1994 in one shiny disc-shaped package - will sort you right out.

Practicals

Unless you've got a really short memory, you should recall that we told you only last week about the Red Dwarf X DiabloSkinz - a range of tasty vinyl covers to stick on to your phone, tablet, e-reader and/or laptop. Assorted Red Dwarf tie-in objects from years past remain available in some outlets as well, however: most notably Underground Toys' pair of series and JMC logo mugs, and a handful of the reissued classic t-shirt designs.

Books

The Red Dwarf Omnibus has been in print for over two decades, and is still a classic twist on the Red Dwarf story that demands to be read by any fan. In the last year, Robert Llewellyn has also released an updated version of his The Man in the Rubber Mask memoir, taking you behind the scenes of his twenty-four years working on the show. You can read more about the history of Red Dwarf publications here, and see which books are available wherever in the world you are courtesy of our recently updated book database.

Digital

Every single episode of Red Dwarf is available in downloadable MP4 form via our iTunes Room - where you can also get the Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs compilations. The Radio Show adaptations of the first two audiobooks can also be found on iTunes - while if you want the full unabridged audiobook experience, you can get both at Audible. And if you're in a more musical mood, Howard Goodall's Red Dwarf Piano Fantasies single - containing new versions of the theme tune and "Tongue Tied" - is available both on iTunes and at assorted other digital music stores.
