Bobby Llew Is Making Do
Read a chapter of Sold Out - and meet Robert on tour.
3 October, 2008
He may not have been spending his hard-earned cash on consumer goods, but boy does Robert Llewellyn find ways to keep himself busy. Following foreign travel, TV appearances and, oh yeah, confirming the most important news in a decade the Kryten actor has a new book out - and we have a free chapter for you!
You may have been keeping up with the 'Making Do' video diaries on Robert's YouTube channel, or indeed his column in The Economist, but if not, here's the deal: No shopping.
Tackling consumerism head-on in the most personal way possible, after a heavy Christmas Robert elected to spend 2007 a respectable distance from his credit cards, refusing to buy anything for himself for an entire a year. Making do with what he had. And yes, this does mean the occasional darning of socks.
Sold Out! How I Survived A Year Of Not Shopping, published by Gaia, is the book that chronicles the journey of a man who previously found it hard to ignore any new product from Apple, and it's out on October 15th. You can have a read of the chapter entitled 'Guilt' by clicking this link for the PDF.
Robert is also taking part in a small book tour, so if you'd like to go along and point out the irony of an anti-consumerism book being made available for sale (cos he won't have heard that one already), here are the details:
