It's always great to start January with some good news, and that's exactly what we're doing this week, because Rob Grant and Andrew Marshall's The Nether Regions, the duo's original sketch comedy for BBC Radio 4, is back for a full series, and the first episode is available to listen to right now. Happy New Year indeed!
Described by the Radio Times as "inspired madness," and The Observer as "gloriously uncanny," The Nether Regions was originally conceived as a one-off pilot back in 2019. We're delighted that we're getting the chance to hear more from this horror and science fiction-inspired world, with recurring concepts and characters allowing for a much more ambitious project than the original half hour permitted. Here's the synopsis:
Rob Grant (Son of Cliché, Spitting Image, Red Dwarf) and Andrew Marshall (Burkiss Way, Whoops Apocalypse, 2point4children) invite you back for a deeper glimpse into the steaming primordial swamps of their hideously contorted imaginations, known only as: The Nether Regions. Trapped with them in the dank basements of their fetid minds are sparkling young talents Helen Cripps, Ed Rowett, and Holly Morgan.
The Nether Regions is our dystopian present - it's now, but not now, and then, but now. Not.
Past, present and future merge into one writhing tortured tangle, where the Naked Truth climbs out of the window, because Fake News has come home unexpectedly early. Continuing the mirth, mayhem and something else beginning with "M" of the highly-acclaimed pilot show.
Scream in terror. Then listen to the show. Then scream in terror again.
Starring Rob and Andrew, alongside Helen Cripps, Edward Rowett and Holly Morgan, the new series was recorded in front of a live audience at the Shaw Theatre, London, across two nights in November last year. reddwarf.co.uk were lucky enough to be in attendance, and we can confirm that the upcoming episodes are just as funny and inventive as last night's hilarious opener.
The Nether Regions is produced by Absolutely Productions and will continue to be broadcast on Thursday nights at 11pm for the next three weeks on BBC Radio 4. The series will also be available for catch up shortly afterwards on BBC Sounds. Don't miss it.
