Danny Goes Hitchhiking
DJ-J to voice The Book on stage.
13 September, 2013
Although Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy stand as the two titans of British sci-fi comedy, actual direct links between the two over the years have been surprisingly rare. Aside from the fact that the famous badge worn on Rimmer's uniform from Series III onwards was originally used (the other way around) as a policeman's badge in the Hitchhiker's TV series, the only other major connections that come to mind are the appearances of Geoffrey Beevers (Back in the Red Part II) and Jon Glover (Back to Earth) in the last episode of the TV show, and Andy Taylor (Series VIII's Doctor McClaren) in the later radio series.
One name that can now be added to the list, however, is that of Danny John-Jules, as the stage adaptation of Douglas Adams' original radio series heads out on another tour this autumn. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show Live features many of the show's original cast reprising their roles - but one exception is the voice of the titular guide itself. "The Book" was originally voiced by the late Peter Jones on radio and television, and later by Stephen Fry in the 2005 movie version - but for the live show, an array of celebrities drawn from across the worlds of comedy, acting and even literature have been selected to take it in turns to play the role.
And one of these is none other than Danny! He'll be voicing the Book on the following dates:
- 7th October, Sheffield, City Hall
- 8th October, Manchester, Opera House
- 27th October, Woking, New Victoria Theatre
- 29th November, Basingstoke, The Anvil
Ticket prices for the different dates vary depending on venue, but there are links to all the relevant venue booking sites on the Hitchhiker's Live website. Other guest Books throughout the run include impressionist Jon Culshaw, Sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker, author Neil Gaiman, and - in another Red Dwarf connection - Series VI's Captain Tau, Anita Dobson...
