Red Dwarf DVD and Blu-rays going cheap.
20 September, 2013
If you haven't yet got around to completing your collection of Red Dwarf on shiny silver disc, then there's never been a better time to do so than right now. Well, alright, there's probably been one better time - that is, the actual release dates - but right now is still a pretty good time as well.
Over at Amazon, just about every Red Dwarf release currently in print is on sale at a bargain rate, making for a perfect opportunity to fill in any holes in your collection - or, with only 95 days until Christmas, perhaps an early bit of shopping for someone who desperately needs Back to Earth in their life...?
Red Dwarf X
You can get the most recent series on DVD for just £6.90, or on Blu-ray for £12.05. Both discs come with the same set of bonus features, including deleted scenes, Smeg Ups and the epic two-hour "We're Smegged" making-of documentary. We recommend the Blu-ray, to take advantage of Series X's astonishingly good high-resolution camera work. Although only if you've actually got a Blu-ray player, of course.
Back to Earth
The Director's Cut boxset of the 2009 special is only £6.25 on DVD, and a ridiculously cheap £9.00 on Blu-ray. Again, the BD takes better advantage of the high-definition quality of the specials, but it's also worth noting that only the DVD is actually a screen-accurate prop replica.
Just The Shows: Series I-VIII
Now, this really is ridiculous. The first eight series of Red Dwarf, in one lovely chunky DVD boxset, for just £16.46. That's less than 32 pence per episode! Only around a penny per minute of material! The only downside to this set, of course, is that it doesn't feature all the brilliant double-disc extras - but fortunately...
Series I-VIII (Individual Sets)
We're not really sure exactly what rationale goes into Amazon's pricing structure here - while Series II is only £4.84, Series VI is as much as £7.32 - but nevertheless, if you're missing any of the individual sets, with their multi-disc bonus features of documentaries, outtakes and all manner of extra goodies, then this is the best opportunity you're going to get to pick them up at a bargain price. Some of Amazon's third-party seller partners even have the Series V and Series VIII Corgi-toy gift sets still in stock, at lower prices than you might find perusing the second-hand market.
If you're after a new copy of the 20th Anniversary All The Shows boxset, however, you might be in less luck. Well, unless you've got a spare three hundred quid to hand...
