Back to Reality... Back

Fan Club magazine returns.

17 May, 2013

Fresh from the triumph of a hugely successful Dimension Jump convention, the Official Red Dwarf Fan Club are now turning their attention to more everyday matters: and top of the agenda is the fate of Back to Reality, the members-only magazine the club produces.

A combination of unfortunate circumstances has meant that the magazine has been on enforced hiatus over the last year, but the good news is that the latest issue, #4, is now on its way out to members. What's more, once this issue has been distributed, the club have firm plans in place to ensure that the publication once again returns to its intended quarterly schedule.

Issue #4 covers the team's reactions to Series X - from recording dates through to DVD release - and also features an exclusive column by Robert Llewellyn, interviews with Bill Pearson and Chloë Annett, the first part of a fantastic fan-produced comic strip, and a lot more besides!

Back to Reality... Back

If you're eagerly awaiting the post each day for the issue to arrive, however, you might want to think about looking elsewhere. As this missive from the fan club explains, with this latest issue comes a change in format:

Traditionally, Back To Reality has always been released in a printed format, but from this issue onwards we are switching to a digital PDF format that can be accessed online. The rising costs of printing and posting the magazine means that it takes up a vast share of the finances of the Fan Club which could otherwise be used on Dimension Jump. We also want to try and get the magazine to you more regularly and removing the printing process should allow for a quicker turn over time.

The magazines will be accessible via a members-only section of the site which will be password protected to retain exclusivity for members. We'll also be putting up archive copies of previous magazines for you to go back through.

We hope you'll understand the reasons for this change and look forward to the upcoming edition of the magazine.

This new digital format means that the current issue - not to mention archive issues of Back to Reality and, eventually, even its predecessor Better Than Life - can be read on just about any device that will handle PDF files. So that's your PC, Mac, smartphone, iPad, Android tablet, Kindle... you name it, if it's a device you might want to think about reading about Red Dwarf on, you can probably do it.

Due to this new reliance on digital communication, the club are also requesting that members keep them up to date with current contact details. If you think your email address might have changed since you originally signed up, or if you haven't been receiving messages from them recently, then please email the team.

In other news, the Fan Club are pleased to announce that following the memorabilia auctions at Dimension Jump XVII they have been able to make a donation of £2,000 to the Tony Hawks Foundation, a charity set up by the oftentimes Red Dwarf guest star with the aim of building a care centre in Moldova for children with cerebral palsy. If you're interested in making a donation yourself, see the foundation's fundraising page for more information.
