Future Inc
New short film from Red Dwarf's script editor.
27 April, 2012
While some of the Grant Naylor Productions crew are hard at work in post production, carefully crafting Red Dwarf X for your Autumn 2012 enjoyment, the rest of those involved with the show have been free to work on their own creative endeavours. And in particular, the medium of self-produced short film is starting to prove especially popular with the Dwarf crowd.
We've already told you about Danny John-Jules' short film Bucky - now successfully shot, but still seeking donors to help with post-production and marketing - and now, one-time website editor turned Back to Earth associate producer turned Series X script editor Andrew Ellard is getting in on the act.
Created as an entry in the Sci-Fi London Festival's 48-Hour Film Challenge, Future Inc's big gimmick is hence that it was entirely written, shot and post-produced within... well, within 48 hours. At the beginning of the weekend, writer Andrew and director Martin Stirling were given no more than a title, along with a single line of dialogue and a specific set of props to include somewhere in the film. By Monday morning, they had a complete five-minute short.
Naturally, given his Red Dwarf background, Andrew's inclination was to mine the more humorous side of sci-fi - and so Future Inc is a mischievous high-concept black comedy, with a delicious sting in the tail. To say any more would ruin most of the fun, so we suggest you just head over and watch it - and bonus points if you can spot the subtle Dwarf reference within...
