The Rubber Mask Speaks
Robert's audio memoir now available in full.
27 January, 2012
Last year we told you that Robert Llewellyn was in the process of releasing a brand new audio recording of his classic memoir The Man in the Rubber Mask via the online service AudioBoo. At the time, only the first couple of chapters were available - but now, you can download his reading of the entire book. Nifty!
One of the most enlightening and enthralling looks behind the scenes of any television programme, The Man in the Rubber Mask alights on Robert's early career in comedy before telling the story of his joining Red Dwarf at the beginning of Series III. It then takes an in-depth look at his time on the show up until the end of Series V, finishing with an especially fascinating warts-and-all account of the making of the infamous Red Dwarf USA pilot.
Having now recorded the entirety of his original 1994 manuscript, Robert has made the whole thing available for a spectacularly bargainous £4.99. For this price, you get access to download the book either in its individual chapters or as a single, MP3-player-friendly file - although if you want to try it out first, the opening three chapters are each available entirely free.
But if you thought you were just getting one book for your four hundred and ninety-nine pennies, then you'd be wrong. In addition to the five hours of entertainment the original book provides, paying the one-off subscription fee also grants you access to any future content on the Man in the Rubber Mask AudioBoo channel - which for the moment consists of short behind-the-scenes "Boos" posted by Robert, but which will in time come to encompass an entire second volume of his memoirs, taking the listener through Series VI, VII, VIII, Back to Earth and even the upcoming Series X.
Even if you've read the original book, this new version is well worth the listening experience - but the promised bonus content makes it a near unmissable treat for all Red Dwarf fans. Not to mention the constant enjoyment of hearing Robert's impression of Danny...
