iTunes Now Un-Remastered
Fans of the original shows rejoice - they're finally up for download!
28 August, 2009
Hopefully you've been keeping track of the iTunes releases of Red Dwarf. If not, well, every month a new series of the show has been added to the download store - right now we're up to Series V, so if you work backwards that means we started in April. Bonus points if you didn't use your fingers there.
But there has been a slight niggle to-date, as BBC Worldwide had used the remastered editions of Series I to III. When, in fact, it's the original versions that are considered 'definitive'.
Well, rejoice all ye downloaders - because, thanks to a little intervention from GNP, those episodes have now been completely replaced with the original versions of the show. No more bluescreen skutters, no more CGI, and no sound effect added to a hologram crashing into something outside the room.
You can grab the lot - in their lovely, original form - from iTunes.
If you're unaware of the remastered shows, they were originally created in 1997 in the run-up to the 1998 tenth anniversary. The updated picture, plus bazillions of FX, sound and editing changes, made a huge difference to overseas sales of the show - getting Red Dwarf into brand new countries, even making it onto Japan's equivalent of BBC1.
The episodes are now available on DVD as part of The Bodysnatcher Collection.
