Opinion List
Den of Geek select their top ten Red Dwarf episodes.
13 June, 2008
Nerd-fuelled (we mean it in a nice way) website Den of Geek have published a 'ten best episodes of Red Dwarf' list, and it's an interesting collection.
Writer Stacy Kidd has surprised nobody with Back to Reality at the top spot (aside from a brief period in the mid-90s where Gunmen of the Apocalypse ruled supreme, it's been the top-rated ep though most of its existence), but after that there are a few surprises. Here's the list, but check the original article for the full reasoning:
- Back To Reality - Series V
- Backwards - Series III
- Quarantine - Series V
- Parallel Universe - Series II
- Better Than Life - Series II
- Gunmen Of The Apocalypse - Series VI
- The End - Series I
- White Hole - Series IV
- Stoke Me a Clipper - Series VII
- Krytie TV - Series VIII
White Hole is deliberately selected over fan-favourite Ace origin episode Dimension Jump, which is usual. The End rarely makes lists like these, either, with opinion generally favouring stories set after all the set-up was out of the way.
And how interesting to see Parallel Universe up there. Not only would Queeg have been more typical, but the Series II documentary on The Bodysnatcher Collection reveals it to be an episode not especially favoured by the makers, either. ('Full of great moments, but simplistic on the sexual politics' is the upshot, but watch the whole thing for the proper analysis.)
Backwards over Polymorph, Krytie TV over Cassandra - and no Tikka to Ride or Marooned. It's these wide-ranging opinions that make Red Dwarf fandom so interesting. In fact, please post your own top ten episodes on the Forum, let's see what everybody else thinks.
