Red Dwarf items go under the virtual hammer in aid of Cancer Research.

The Propstore of London, in association with Grant Naylor Productions, have begun a very special auction this December - the centrepiece of which is an item with an important and poignant history all of its own.

The 'Rimmer on the Toilet' painting was revealed during the final telling denouement of the Red Dwarf II episode Kryten. It was created especially for the production and has become one of the most iconic images of the second series.

The painting was 'adopted' by production designer Mel Bibby when he joined the crew for Series III, constructing sets for all subsequent seasons. It remained in his possession until his tragic death from cancer in June, 2002, aged just 54.

Mel's wife Chrissie (best known to fans as Chrissie Moses, a Red Dwarf stalwart since Series IV) has asked that the painting be auctioned, with all proceeds donated to Cancer Research. With remarkable generosity, the Propstore have agreed to run the auction for us, and have even added some 50 items from their collection, a percentage of the proceedings from which will also be donated to this worthy cause.

It's a chance to do some good this Christmas, as well an opportunity to pick up a genuine piece of Red Dwarf memorabilia. The auctions kick off on Friday, December 3rd.

Each auction will run for seven days with ten new items going live each weekday. Therefore the first auction will end on Friday the 10th, with the others finishing on consecutive days thereafter.

End of an amazing two weeks, and the Rimmer painting has sold for a fantastic £3,026 - all of which will go the the charity! Thank you everyone, from Chrissie, Grant Naylor and the Prop Store, for supporting this important cause.

Other big items included Rimmer's cavalier costume (£230), a complete GELF costume (£215), Rimmer's Bodyswappyjamas (£310), Lister's Back in the Redoveralls and wig (£195), Cat's gold costume (£172), a ground controller jumpsuit (£165) and Cat's chequered The Last Daysuit (£150). Oh, and the most disturbing of all - Rimmer's kinky low gear from Demons & Angels(£165).

Donations from all of these will also be given to Cancer Research. Everyone who picked up one of the 50 items deserves much good karma (or possible korma). Although...

We say 50 items, but a few had to be pulled from eBay - the various guns from the show! Apparently what the prison guards had been wielding were just a little too realistic. Authentic, functioning Red Dwarf weaponry?! What a shame they'd run out of bazookoids and time wands!
