Who's The Greatest?

It's a question debated constantly by comedy fans - and next year, TV channel Gold is going to try to find an answer. Just who is Britain's greatest ever comedy character?

Well, if you're reading this, chances are you think at least one of four Red Dwarf characters is in with a shot - and if that's the case, you'll want to get involved in the public vote to help decide a shortlist. That shortlist of thirty will be whittled down and debated by a jury of nine comedians, actors, writers, journalists and critics in a three-hour special set to air on Gold next year.

Given that most of the best sitcoms generally provide one, two or three truly memorable characters for the ages, Red Dwarf is in the rare position of having four or even five who could feasibly make the list - so it's a good job that the poll lets you nominate up to five of your favourite choices. Of course, we can't tell you exactly who you should vote for, all we can do is tell you the poll exists and hope your conscience does the rest...

To cast your votes, head on over to the Gold website. You can select from a pre-populated list (which, yes, does already have all of Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and Cat on it - our thanks go to our chums at UKTV for thinking of us) or you can write-in a candidate if they're not listed (say, if you happen to be a particularly big fan of a deadpan computer). And if you want to spend the festive period giving it some thought, then fine - but just note you've only got until January 13th to make your vote count!
