A Double Dose of Lovett
Norman's new radio sitcom... and a convention appearance!
23 October, 2015
Those of you wondering what Norman Lovett has been up to recently will no doubt be pleased to learn that his dulcet tones can currently be heard on BBC Radio 4 on a weekly basis - thanks to his guest role in a new radio sitcom, To Hull and Back.
The series is written by award-winning standup comedian Lucy Beaumont, and stars Beaumont herself alongside Maureen Lipman in what sounds like a sort of Steptoe and Son - or, rather, Daughter - with a modern twist:
Sophie still lives at home with her mum in Hull. They make a living doing car boot sales at the weekend - except they don't really make a living because her mum can't bear to get rid of any of their junk.
As their house gets more cluttered, Sophie feels more trapped, and dreams of moving to London to meet her dad and become a famous actress. But will this dream come true?
It has a relatively small ensemble cast, but one of the recurring cast members is none other than Norman, who plays neighbour Ernie. The series is running on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm on BBC Radio 4 - so far, a repeat of the 2014 pilot episode, and the first episode of the series proper, have been broadcast, but you can catch up with both, as well as listening live to subsequent episodes as they're broadcast, on BBC iPlayer Radio.
If the voice isn't enough, however, then you can meet Norman face-to-face at an upcoming sci-fi convention. It's going to be a bit of a quiet winter for Red Dwarf cast members at shows, for obvious reasons - but Wyntercon has managed to snag Norman as a signing guest for their event next weekend. The show takes place at the Eastbourne Winter Garden on Saturday 31st October - Sunday 1st November, and tickets start at £11.50 for a day pass. You can find out more at their website!
