Let's Jump Again
It's time to pull on your drinking trousers as the Dimension Jump XI weekend is scheduled.
12 September, 2003
Get this straight right now - whatever dancing happens at Dimension Jump is strictly between attendees. After last year's humiliations, certain website co-ordinators do not want to see tapes of an octopus having a spasm distributed among the Red Dwarf fanbase. Is that clear? Good.
So, onto the important stuff. The details for Dimension Jump XI are as follows:
Dimension Jump 2004
11th-13th June
Bedford Moat House Hotel
Bedford, England
If you register for the weekend before January 31st, 2004 registration costs just £50 for club members (£55 for non-members). After that, the price goes up - so for non-members it's worth joining the club at the same time as registering, magically creating a discount for the four issues of BTL that membership entitles you to!
Reddwarf.co.uk settled down for a chat with Jane Williams, club chairman and the woman who - along with the club team - makes DJ possible. Despite the stress of this strictly voluntary role, Jane remains adamant that it's all worthwhile. "It's definitely worth it! While it's very hard work and takes a lot of organisation, I'm always on a high for the weekend itself. Meeting up with everyone is great, as it's usually the only big get-together of RD fans, and it's fab to meet other people who love the show like I do! And I love meeting the cast, I do a lot of travelling to go to cast appearances, so it's nice when they come to me for a change!"
No details whatsoever yet regarding who is scheduled to appear, but previous conventions have included guests from both cast and crew. The names have included Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn, Norman Lovett, Hattie Hayridge, Chloë Annett, Rob Grant, Doug Naylor, Ed Bye, Peter Wragg, Mike Tucker, Mac McDonald, Graham McTavish, Lee Cornes, John Lenahan and many more (including GNP layabout Andrew Ellard and his much-more-famous penguin sidekick, Mr Flibble.)
Dimension Jump is also one place where fans have seen exclusive footage from Grant Naylor Productions - including special effects preview tapes, smeg ups (long before the idea occurred to release them on video) and behind the scenes glimpses. Not that things are the same every time...
"It's always dependant on when the guests are available. Some guests can only come on one day, sometimes just for a few hours, so everything is really dictated by their times. It's good to have a bit of a change, and we already have a different idea for Friday night next year - although it's all very hush, hush at the moment! You learn something every time from running a big event like this. One success for us was the new system to avoid a long wait in the autograph queue, as we do our best to entertain everyone for the whole weekend."
Jane, meanwhile, has her own favourite convention moments: "I love the Saturday night! The fancy dress competition never fails to amaze me - the costumes people come up with are just fab. You never know what you're going to see. That's followed by a cabaret which is always great fun, and after that the disco - I just love to dance, and it's the team's chance to let their hair down and boogie the night away."
Currently stored in the reddwarf.co.uk Down Time section are reports of what we can recall, through the haze, of previous weekends Dimension Jump X, Dimension Jump IX and DJ2K. A good time was most definitely had. Will you be with us this time?
