UKTV's on-demand service gets subtitle update.
28 February, 2020
If you've watched Red Dwarf over on UKTV Play, the on-demand service that features every episode of the Dave era to stream completely free, you might have noticed something missing. We've been asked by fans previously about the availability of closed-caption subtitles for the episodes that are on there, and we're pleased to report that every Red Dwarf episode available on UKTV Play now also features its original broadcast subtitles.
This means that all episodes of Red Dwarf available to stream now have this important accessibility feature included - as the Series I-VIII episodes on Netflix also feature subtitles. The availability on other stream and download platforms does vary - unfortunately, while subtitles have been produced for every Red Dwarf episode, their deployment is dependent on the individual platforms. Of course, it's also worth noting that on the DVD and Blu-ray sets, subtitles are entirely present and correct, including across the bonus features!
Separately, UKTV Play have also stated on Twitter that they are looking into Audio Description as an additional accessibility feature for broadcast and on-demand in future. If and when we get word on Red Dwarf being enhanced in this way, we'll let you know...
