Presents From The Future
Your Red Dwarf Christmas Gift Guide.
9 December, 2016
We've been doing these annual Red Dwarf Christmas gift ideas roundups for many years, now - but we've never had a year in which there have suddenly been quite so many new items to include. So as much as anything, this year's list can serve as an aide memoire for all the things you might have missed yourself - never mind the stuff you're going to want to get for any other Dwarfers in your life...
Apparel
Over in the official Red Dwarf XI merchandise store, we've got so many different items of clothing you might need an entirely new wardrobe to fit them all in. And we haven't stopped adding new ones yet, either - you may have noticed that two more brand new designs have landed in the shop this week (the Red Dwarf Owner's Manual and "No Longer Insane"), so even if you'd already bought everything else the shop had to offer, there's still something new you can pop on your Christmas list.
T-shirts, hoodies, polo shirts and the Christmas sweater are available in a range of sizes up to XXL - and some, such as the Starbug Owner's Manual, can also be found in XXXL and a new women's fit version. Whether you're a Captain Bollocks, a Third Technician or you just want to look like Kryten, there's a design to suit every chest.
We've been advised that the last order date for Christmas delivery from the RD shop is Sunday 18th December - although obviously, the earlier you order the better! Any later than that, however, and only a Time Drive will be able to help you...
Shiny Discs
Of course, it being the first Christmas after a new Red Dwarf series, we bet many of you will be hoping to find the episodes in your stocking this Christmas. And you've got a range of formats to choose from - the ever-classic DVD set(with reversible cover), the standard Blu-ray, or the lovely limited edition Blu-ray steelbook. Every format comes with a whopping set of extras including behind-the-scenes documentary, deleted scenes, Smeg Ups and visual FX footage.
But let's not forget all the Red Dwarf history you can still get on disc, either. It's been fifteen years since we started releasing the extras-laden DVD sets of the original series, and they're all still available, from Series I through to VIII. Or if you don't need the extras but want the most value-tastic method of getting 52 episodes of Red Dwarf imaginable, then the ever-sturdy Just the Shows boxset is still the best way to get your fix.
And meanwhile, as the modern Dave era of the show also involved a move into high-definition, you can get the Back to Earth specials and 2012's Series X on Blu-ray as well as DVD!
You can also relive happy memories of Christmases past, by picking up Just the Smegs - collecting the two classic Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs video compilations from the mid-1990s - on DVD.
Stocking Fillers
Heading back over to the official Red Dwarf store, meanwhile, and it's not just clothes you'll find - but there are also a whole bunch of lovely Red Dwarf XI items that would fit perfectly in the Christmas stocking of a loved one (or, indeed, your own). There's the Krysis keyring, the postcard set, the button badges, the Starbug lanyard, the "Posse" mug... and you can even put them all in a Series XI-branded tote bag if you wish.
Books
Did you know that the Red Dwarf Omnibus, collecting the first two novels, is still technically in print? While the original editions of the books can now generally only be found second-hand, you can still order a brand new copy of the Omnibus - meaning that, since it was first published in 1992, we reckon it's the longest-serving piece of continuously-available Red Dwarf merch. Which is nice.
Among the array of other Dwarf-related books that have been published down the years, the most recent is Robert Llewellyn's updated and re-issued The Man in the Rubber Mask memoir - which again is still in print and available new.
Phew. It's pretty safe to say that with all of this stuff out there, there hasn't been a better Christmas to be a Dwarf fan in a very long time. Maybe Father Christmas ought to get himself a Jupiter Mining Corporation-branded sack while he's at it...
Browse everything that's available to buy in our Merch section - and have a very Dwarfy Christmas!
