Red Christmas

Your Dwarfy Gift Guide.

5 December, 2014

It's that time of year again - and is it just us, or does it seem to come around more quickly with each passing year? - so as you count down the shopping days to Christmas (nineteen left at the time we're publishing this), let us guide you through the current range of Red Dwarf-related items available to drop into the stocking of the Dwarfer in your life. And in the style of one of those last-minute-gift-guides you find in the newspapers every December, this time around we've sorted them handily by price range.

Plus, read on for details of an exclusive special offer on Red Dwarf t-shirts...

Red Christmas

£1-2 - iTunes Episodes

If you've got a Red Dwarf fan - or someone you want to convert into a Red Dwarf fan - in a Secret Santa exchange with a particularly low upper limit, then you might want to consider gifting them an episode or two from iTunes. Individual episodes start at £1.19 each (it rises to a little more for the high-definition Series X), while you can get an entire series for £5.99 and upwards. Heck, at those prices, you might want to just nab them for yourself...

£3.49 - Red Dwarf Radio Shows

But if you're after a digital gift for someone who prefers to listen rather than watch, how about some Red Dwarf on audio? Laughing Stock now have digital downloads available of the two Red Dwarf Radio Show series - starring Chris Barrie (as... everyone, basically), they're audio adaptations of the first two novels that are available in a total of four volumes, priced at £3.49 each.

£4-8 - The Man in the Rubber Mask

Speaking of books, how about Robert Llewellyn's brilliant autobiography, The Man in the Rubber Mask? Freshly updated to include the behind-the-scenes story of Series X, it's the only Red Dwarf related book currently available as an eBook, which you can get on the Kindle for £4 (although you can't gift those, so you might just have to get it as a present for yourself) - or you can get the paperback for £8...

£6-10 - DVD Series Sets

The individual series DVD boxsets, with their jam-packed bonus discs, are all still available at astonishingly reasonable prices. They tend to fluctuate on Amazon due to complex algorithms that we don't really understand - but at the moment, they range from around £6 for Series II, all the way up to £9.99 for Back to Earth. And don't forget the terrific Just the Smegs compilation, too - you can relive the Christmases of 1994 and 1995 in one handy DVD-shaped package for just under eight quid.

£9-12 - Blu-Ray Sets

Of course, if you like your Dwarf a bit more high-definition - and who doesn't? - and you have the appropriate kind of player, then a Blu-ray set might be more up your street. Back to Earth: The Directors Cut is still available for just under £12, while Series X - complete with its stonkingly good bonus material and documentary - is only £9. Cor.

£12 - Red Dwarf Omnibus

This compilation of the first two Red Dwarf novels - plus additional bonus materials - remains a classic over twenty years after its first publication. At twelve quid for over 600 pages, it's supremely good value even before you take into account just how good the books are, and it still makes a brilliant stocking filler.

£10-30 - Diablo Skinz

DiabloSkinz now offer custom Red Dwarf X-themed skins and cases for so many different devices, it's difficult to keep track. At the time of writing, they haven't yet expanded to include the recent iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, but there's still a huge range covered. Depending on your model, you can get your phone handset covered for around a tenner, or many brands of tablet or laptop for up to £20. And if you're feeling particularly flush and you know a Dwarfer with an iPad Mini, how about a gorgeous leather case at £30?

£15 - T-Shirts

Just in time for Christmas, The Stamp Centre (aka Sci-Fi Collector) have for sale a new print run of two of the original classic Red Dwarf t-shirt designs: the Ace Rimmer "Smoke me a Kipper" quote, and the timeless "Smeg Head" design. You can get them via the website, or at their store on the Strand in central London.

Even better than that, however, they're offering a special deal for reddwarf.co.uk readers and Fan Club members in the lead-up to Christmas! You can either:

- Buy one shirt (at the usual price of £14.99) but choose the "Red Dwarf Fan Club Offer" at the checkout to get free P&P (usual cost £3 per shirt)

or

- Buy two shirts, and enter the code 2RDT at the checkout to get both shirts for £27.50 including P&P!

But whichever you go for, make sure you hurry, as the shirts and the offer won't be around forever...!

£20 - Just the Shows Boxset

There's nothing quite like a DVD boxset at Christmas. Sure, digital episodes are one thing, but nothing else matches the joy of tearing open the wrapping of a big chunky cardboard box filled with shiny discs. Fortunately, the Just the Shows set - a £20 package that contains all of the first eight series in one go - will allow your lucky gift recipient to do exactly that.
