Red Dwarf voted eighth best British TV series.

8 June, 2012

Everybody loves a good "best of" poll - and here at reddwarf.co.uk, we like them even better when Red Dwarf is one of the "bests". Which is exactly what's happened over at LOVEFiLM.com, the DVD rental and on-demand video service, who recently asked nearly fifteen thousand users to vote for their favourite British TV series of all time.

In a list heavily dominated by comedy - with Doctor Who and Sherlock the only dramas to make the top ten - Red Dwarf joined such luminaries as Blackadder, Fawlty Towers and Father Ted to take eighth place in the poll. That's not just "eighth best comedy" or "eighth best sci-fi programme" or anything, either - that's "eighth best British TV series of all time". Two places ahead of Top Gear and everything. Take that, Clarkson.

Of course, when these sorts of polls appear in the papers, they're usually just fodder upon which to hang a press release - but at least LOVEFiLM have the justification that they're promoting series that appear on their LOVEFiLM Instant service. And in case you didn't already know, that includes a hefty chunk of Red Dwarf action.

In fact, the results look even more impressive when you take into account movies, which were also included in the overall "Best of British" poll. Ranking the top hundred UK-produced TV shows and movies available for streaming or physical rental on the site, Red Dwarf placed a staggering twelfth - ahead of Harry Potter, Withnail & I and an absolute deluge of Richard Curtis films.

Commenting on the poll, LOVEFiLM editor Helen Cowley said, "With comedy featuring heavily in the top ten, the results reflect the very British dry sense of humour." reddwarf.co.uk, meanwhile, says, "Ah, smug mode!"
