International iPlayer App: The Details
Which series of Red Dwarf will feature?
5 August, 2011
As reported last week, BBC Worldwide released their international iPlayer iPad app featuring both sponsored and paid content for Western European audiences.
The app itself is free and available in Germany, Italy, Spain, France, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland and Austria.
A subscription for all content will cost €6.99 per month, with the option of an annual subscription priced at €49.99. Content available at launch includes Sherlock, Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers, Top Gear, Eastenders, Absolutely Fabulous, Panorama and Only Fools and Horses. Which certainly offers an interesting photofit snapshot of 'British life'.
Non-BBC shows such as Primeval will also feature, much as they might on BBC America, because they are made by independent production companies. This is access to an 'archive' rather than to a broadcaster's current output.
So what Red Dwarf does that mean for these lucky viewers in eleven countries? Well, initially they'll be getting Series I and II, a total of twelve episodes. But it seems likely that we can expect that to go up as time goes on.
The app doesn't just allow streaming content, as per the iPlayer app in the UK - much like the desktop iPlayer, content can be downloaded and saved for viewing offline.
Hand-held touch-screen tablet computers. Blimey, it's like we're living in the future, innit?
Download the app now from iTunes.
