Howard Goodall CBE
Red Dwarf composer honoured.
7 January, 2011
Named in the 2011 New Year Honours List in recognition of his services to music education, composer Howard Goodall has been awarded a CBE - that's 'Commander of the Order of the British Empire', but 'COTOOTBE' was felt to sound too much like a Star Wars character.
Howard composed the famous Red Dwarf theme tune in its various versions. His music for the TV series has taken in all manner of dramatic and parody styles, as well as composing the music for Tongue Tied and the Rimmer Munchkin Song. (We highly recommend Settling the Score, a half-hour documentary on the Series VI DVD hosted by the man himself that covers his extraordinary contribution.)
He also hosts a regular show on Classic FM and recently presented Music Room on Sky Arts. Last year Howard won the Music Composition Emmy for the HBO's Churchill TV movie Into the Storm.
Also named was Blackadder and Spitting Image producer John Lloyd, a man who - in its earliest days of development - might himself have ended up producing Red Dwarf.
Congratulations Howard. Between this and Hattie winning her episode of Celebrity Mastermind 2011 has got off to a pretty good start!
