Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers - complete, uncut, total, entire, absolute and unadulterated.
4 July, 2008
The success of the Red Dwarf Radio Shows on iTunes has been wonderful in this, Red Dwarf's 20th anniversary year. The Radio Shows have spent a lovely, long time on the iTunes comedy chart, and getting together with those characters in their parallel incarnation has been like snuggling up to a warm, familiar-smelling duvet.
No surprise, then, that Laughing Stock have dug into the archives and recovered Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers - Unabridged.
Teaming up with talking book bigwigs Audible.co.uk(and Audible.com for our American users), you can now download the entire, eight hour extravaganza for the insanely discounted price of just £9.09.
Yes, you read that right. (And it works out even cheaper if you're already and Audible subscriber!)
Written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, Infinity charts the scruffy beginnings of Dave Lister as he attempts to use his 'job' aboard Red Dwarf to cheat a ride back to Earth. Unfortunately he didn't reckon on Arnold Rimmer, a nuclear explosion, extreme feline evolution, another Arnold Rimmer, a space-bound advertising campaign for Coke, or a super-addictive video game.
The whole thing is read and performed by Chris Barrie. While the unabridged is missing the music and effects that make the Radio Shows such a rich experience, Chris' voice work is second to none, bringing every character to life like some bizarre voice-magician.
You can check it out here in the UK, or here in the States... or here for France, or here in Germany. (And you'll notice Hattie Hayridge's autobiography, Random Abstract Memory, is also available.)
