Japanese Re-Release
All-series box-set makes a second appearance on the shelves.
20 January, 2006
Oh, Japan - you lucky people. All eight series, plus Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs, all available in one 10-disc DVD box-set. The date to remember is January 27th. We really are too good to you.
Back in 2003 Red Dwarf was really taking off in Japan. It was the only British comedy series to be shown on terrestrial Japanese TV, a fanbase was growing. Only problem was, there had been no VHS release in the region, the DVDs were still being worked on, and the fans were hungry for a little Dwarf of their own.
So it was decided to release 'vanilla' DVDs. Each series went out individually, as well as in half-series sets with either the Smeg Ups or Smeg Outs. Episodes could be watched subtitled or dubbed (a VHS release at the same time saw two editions of each series come out, one dubbed, one subtitled). The box-sets sold out on pre-order alone - sold out before being released.
And now, at last, the discs are being re-released in a single box, available from all the usual outlets in-store and online (such as Amazon.co.jp) at a retail price of 31,500 Yen. Snap them up quick, though - if the last release is anything to go by, the shelves will be cleared before they get stocked!
