DVD IV Awarded
Red Dwarf's fourth release wins top award at Mipcom!
29 October, 2004
Cannes was a-buzz this month as the Mipcom festival arrived in town to celebrate all things DVD. Over 3,500 companies attended the event, representing all aspects of the medium around the globe - and yes, squeezed in among 20th Century Fox, Universal and Pathé were a little-known British outfit called BBC Worldwide...
The Red Dwarf IV DVD was nominated for the TV Series In English award. Speaking at the ceremony in the Palais des Festivals event MC Stewart McBride, from United Digital Artists, explained the ethos of the prize-giving. "The award seeks to recognise companies that are adding value to their content by using the format to its potential, either through additional footage, interviews, extra content or interactivity."
Well, as anyone who picked up the four Dwarf releases to date, that certainly sounds like us - and, fighting off competition from titles such as Warner's Smallville, Red Dwarf came home victorious!
Jean-Luc Renaud - jury member and editor of dvd-intelligence.com - had this to say: "The jury was impressed with the creative nature of the DVD menu that gave access to a wealth of material the series' fans will appreciate - which includes an all-too-rare user-friendly link to a well-endowed Red Dwarf website."
All in all it's a wonderful result, both for the BBC and for Grant Naylor Productions, who have jointly slaved away to make these titles the very best TV DVDs on the market. (And, to be honest, we're also flattered that reddwarf.co.uk got a mention.) The only disappointment is that Mr Flibble was unable to attend the event - he was at home, washing his bow-tie.
