Red Dwarf returns to audience shooting!
13 December, 2019
There's currently new Red Dwarf in production, and that in itself is already an exciting fact. But where it gets even more exciting, is when the show gets to go before a live audience once more. 9th March 2016 was the last time an episode was filmed before an audience - Series XII's epic closer Skipper - but after what's felt like an age, several hundred lucky fans will get to make their way to Pinewood tonight to see the first of two sessions for next year's Red Dwarf Special.
(Tonight's recording was, of course, originally scheduled to be the second of two - but as reported previously, last week's planned date had to be postponed, and so what was the second now becomes the first. A replacement filming date will be arranged in the new year, and we'll bring you the details of exactly when that will be as soon as we have them.)
2020 will see Red Dwarf become only the second sitcom in UK television history - the first being Last of the Summer Wine - to have aired new episodes in five different decades. As to when in the year the special will air, that's still not confirmed - anything you might read online is, as ever, unconfirmed speculation rather than anything concrete! - but again, we'll fill you in just as soon as the details are ready to be announced.
And if you haven't been following the likes of Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn on Twitter, then you might have been missing out on a few sneaky peeks at goings-on in and around the studio...

If you're heading along to the recording tonight, then please remember to adhere to the spoiler policy that has been so admirably stuck to by every single Red Dwarf audience since we began shooting again back in 2011, and keep all mention of what you see off social media until after the shows have aired. It makes it more enjoyable for everyone, not least because you get to spend months knowing stuff your fellow fans don't...
In the meantime, keep an eye on this site and our own Twitter (@RedDwarfHQ), and we'll bring you all the latest from the set, and into post-production and beyond!
