Top Five Dimension Jump Moments
Places are now limited! What will this year's convention bring?
25 February, 2011
The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club have been running Dimension Jump conventions for almost 20 years. And the next one is nearly here!
Dimension Jump XVI
Birmingham Holiday Inn
April 8th-10th, 2011
Visit their website to book your place - surely the... recent excitement over Red Dwarf will make for a revealing few days. Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules are already confirmed - and we've just heard that Hattie Hayridge has also signed-up!
The Fan Club have informed us that DJ XVI - postponed from last year - is going ahead, but that places are now limited. To sign up, prices are just £55 for club members and £60 for non-members.
But what have been the five best moments of Dimension Jumps past...?
5. Cabaret-tastic
The trendily-titled DJ2K featured one of the best line-ups for entertainment. Mac McDonald and his daughters performed a comedy-and-music a capella treat, and two of the show's former mechanical life-forms provided top routines. Norman Lovett's stand-up and John Lenahan's comedy-magic fusion were great...and distracted everyone's attention from the flashing lights and sounds of a Red Dwarf fruit machine.
4. Lister Returns
Dimension Jump '06 featured the triumphant return of Craig Charles. And we do mean triumphant - the actor received a standing ovation when introduced. For a hungover Sunday crowd that's no mean feat. After a tough time at the hands of the tabloids, and eight years away from DJ itself, it was a perfect storm of fan support.
3. A First Look
Dimension Jump '93 featured the last dual appearance of co-creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. But what an appearance it was. The former gestalt entity brought with them a tape of Gunmen of the Apocalypse - an episode that wouldn't be broadcast on BBC2 for months - as well as a slew of Series VI outtakes. In a time before Smeg Ups, this was a rare treat indeed.
2. Kryten In Character
Dimension Jump '95 might have been postponed at the last minute, but when fans flocked to Gatwick they were rewarded with a fully made-up Robert Llewellyn. Filming for the Smeg Outs home video, 'Kryten' took questions from the fans - alongside Craig Charles - before retiring to a constructed set to film a couple of outtakes introductions.
1. A World of Elvis
Dimension Jump '98 saw Elvis impersonator and Meltdown guest-star Clayton Mark show up for a Saturday night performance that nobody will forget - not least because the entire cast joined in! First for some bizarre duets, and then for a vast ensemble finale, Chris, Craig, Robert, Danny, Hattie and Norman all got in on the act. Entirely unplanned, this spontaneous burst of madcap enthusiasm remains the all-time DJ highlight.
